Parental Leave

for self-employed people

The Parental Leave You Never Thought You Could Have Is Possible!

Calling all freelancers, small business owners, entrepreneurs, and self-employed folks:

If you’re pregnant, adopting or fostering, you probably know you need a plan for your business while you bond with your new child. Yet, it can feel overwhelming at the thought of what that plan might be, am I right?

When you’re your own boss, the thought of stepping away from your business for even a moment can feel impossible. From the day-to-day tasks to long term project planning and managing clients on top of that, it’s easy to feel like you can’t be replaced and even harder to imagine someone else being able to fill your shoes in your absence.

What if I told you there is a way to strategically plan a 3 to 6 month parental leave, so you can reduce career and financial stress in advance of your transition into parenthood?

What if you could make a strategic return to work to support your capacity as a new parent - because it’s not just about taking a leave but having a business to return to as well.

What if your parental leave was actually the catalyst to take your business to the next level that you’ve been thinking about but haven’t implemented yet?
What if your parental leave is a test to see how your business can run without you?

That’s where I come in.

Hi! I’m Jen

I work with clients one-on-one just like you, to guide you through the steps of carving time away from your business so you can bond with your baby. I bring my years of experience as a self-employed business owner, a former doula of 15 years who's helped hundreds of families through the transition of new parenthood, and being a mom of two. Having planned two maternity leaves myself, I'm here to help you create your own, self-funded parental leave.

A small business owner who's an expectant mom looks down at her computer while researching Paid Family Leave and Short Term Disability.

    what others are saying

“I really needed my options for maternity leave spelled out to me. Every time I did research I got more and more confused. And then I consulted with Jen. She knows the system better than anyone. She laid out a plan for me, having listened to and incorporated all my needs. It was a dream come true. Immense gratitude to Jen and her powerhouse team.” - Alexandra, Midwife
“There is no way I could have planned (and achieved!) my mat leave without Jen's help. She was instrumental in helping me figure out my options and navigating my complex situation. I'm so grateful that I was able to spend as much time at home as I did, and that is in no small part due to Jen's knowledge.” - Caprice

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • What does a session with you typically look like?

A typical session includes some pre-session preparation items so we can make the most use of our time together. We'll start with a check in and see how your pregnancy is going. We'll then talk about your goal for the session. I like to mix in coaching with educational content, and then spend some time working on strategy together. You'll leave each session with a list of action steps to keep your parental leave planning project moving forward.

    • Can you help me enroll in my state paid family leave insurance fund?

Yes! Government websites can be hard to navigate so if you live in a state with a paid family leave insurance fund, I’m happy to offer support as you apply for those programs. I am not employed by the state and cannot fill out applications on your behalf, but I’m available for any questions you might have.

    • I want kids in the future, but I’m not sure when. Can I still work with you?

Possibly! Everyone’s needs and goals are different and it’s always great to be thinking ahead. You can schedule a free call with me to see if it makes sense to start working together right now.

    • Do you work with people who need to plan a leave for other reasons? (i.e. taking a sabbatical, planned travel, gender confirmation surgery, caring for an elderly parent, etc.)

Absolutely! If you are self-employed and need to plan a leave from work for any reason, I would love to work with you.

    • When and how often do you recommend having coaching sessions?

We recommend scheduling a strategy session during the second trimester. If you opt for the Parental Leave Planning Coaching package, the first 3 sessions (Strategy Session included) will occur before you go on leave. The last two sessions will take place 30 days before you return to work and 30 days after you return to work.

    • Where do you meet?

All sessions are held over Zoom.

    • Do you offer sliding scale?

Yes! I offer sliding scale rates for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ folks, people with disabilities, single parents, and anyone who expresses need. Please email me if you’re interested in working together on a sliding scale.
